Euclid is a European Space Agency telescope launched in July 2023. It is conducting a wide and deep survey over almost a third of the sky, with spectra and high-resolution imaging in optical and near-infrared bands. Euclid will have a significant impact on almost all areas of astronomy, far beyond the core cosmological science of the mission.
In March 2025, Euclid released its first major data release, ‘Quick Release 1’ (Q1), amounting to 63 square degrees of data. Q1 has already provided a wealth of exciting scientific results. These include the discovery of strong gravitational lensing systems, the exploration of galaxy clusters and the cosmic web, the characterization of active galactic nuclei and quasars, studies on galaxy evolution and morphology, and the identification of numerous dwarf galaxies and transients. These results are described in a series of 34 scientific papers published alongside the data.
This RAS Specialist Discussion Meeting gives the UK astronomy community a first opportunity to discuss the Q1 release, with talks from leading Euclid Consortium scientists who have been at forefront of the analysis.
